Privacy Policy
Effective date: April 28, 2026
The Split ("we", "our", or "the app") is a bill-splitting app that helps you divide restaurant bills among friends. Your privacy is important to us. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your choices.
Your Consent
The first time you try to use any AI feature (voice recording, bill photo, or text note), the app shows an in-app prompt that explains what data will be sent and to whom, and asks for your permission. AI processing is disabled until you explicitly tap "Allow". You can revoke that permission at any time from the app's Settings screen, which disables all AI features and stops any further data from being sent.
Data We Collect
We do not create user accounts. The app works entirely without sign-up or login.
- Dinner data (item names, people names, prices, notes) is stored locally on your device using Apple's SwiftData framework. It never leaves your device except when processed by AI services as described below, and only after you have granted AI consent.
- Voice recordings are temporarily recorded on your device and, if you have granted AI consent, sent to OpenAI's Whisper API for transcription. Audio is deleted from your device immediately after transcription.
- Bill photos are stored locally and, if you have granted AI consent, sent to OpenAI or Google for item extraction. Photos are not stored on any third-party server beyond the duration of the API request.
- Text notes are stored locally and, if you have granted AI consent, sent to OpenAI or Google for parsing into structured data.
- The app does not collect, transmit, or share any personally identifying information. Voice, photo, and text content sent to AI providers contains only ad-hoc bill data (item names, friend nicknames, prices). It does not include your name, email, phone number, contacts, location, payment details, or any other PII.
- Purchase information is handled by Apple and RevenueCat for subscription management. We do not store your payment details.
Third-Party Services
- OpenAI processes voice (Whisper), photos (Vision), and text (GPT) to extract bill items and match them to people. Data is sent via encrypted HTTPS. Per OpenAI's commercial API terms, content submitted through the API is not used to train or improve OpenAI models. OpenAI's privacy policy: openai.com/privacy
- Google (Gemini) processes photos and text. Data is sent via encrypted HTTPS. Per Google's Generative AI APIs terms, content submitted through the paid Gemini API is not used to train Google's foundation models or improve Google products. Google's privacy policy: policies.google.com/privacy
- RevenueCat manages subscriptions and purchase verification. RevenueCat's privacy policy: revenuecat.com/privacy
- Apple handles in-app purchases and App Store transactions.
Equal Protection by Third Parties
The Split only sends data to third-party services that contractually commit to a level of data protection equal to what is described in this policy. OpenAI and Google's commercial APIs are subject to their published privacy and data-use terms (linked above), do not retain content beyond what is needed to serve the request, and do not use it for advertising or model training.
Data We Do Not Collect
- We do not collect personal information (name, email, phone number)
- We do not use analytics or tracking tools
- We do not serve advertisements
- We do not share or sell any data to third parties
- We do not use cookies
Data Retention
All dinner data is stored locally on your device. You can delete it at any time through the app's Settings. Voice recordings are deleted immediately after transcription. We do not retain any data on our servers.
Children's Privacy
The app is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children.
Changes
We may update this policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated effective date.
